Amazing Frogs
Frogs are classified in the group of Amphibians.Amphibians means two lives and this is true because Frogs can live in water or land.Frogs start their young life in water as tadpoles and later on they move to land. Frogs are cold blooded that means that their body temperature is the same as their sorrundings. When they are cold they will lay looking at the sun to warm up, and when they are too warm they jump in the water again. Scientists believe that the Frogs have been here since the Jurassic period because of the information they get by fossils! Frogs can live pretty much anywhere except for Antartica and they prefer to live at marshes, ponds, and lakes. Frogs can only live in freshwater, they cannot live in saltwater.
Tadpoles and Metamorphosis
Frogs begin their lives as tadpoles which hatch from a jelly covered egg. The jelly tastes horrible it is a technique so predators don't get very close and eat them. The mother frog will lay thousands of eggs at the same time! Tadpoles are born with gills so they can breathe underwater, like fish. Tadpoles obviously don't look like Frogs, yet. A Tadpoles' life is really dangerous, it is good they can swim fast to escape from predators. Metamorphosis is the process of an animal changing. First, tadpoles develop their legs from behind and then the ones of the front. After 6 weeks their mouth starts to widen. Around 10 weeks later, they develop as a Froglet their eyes start to bulge out and their tails begin to shrink, and eventually disappear! Frogs can go on land when their lungs finish developing!
Food
Frogs are carnivores which means they eat meat. Small and medium sized frogs eat flies, mosquitoes, moths, and dragonflies. Larger frogs may it small snakes, baby turtles, mice, and even smaller frogs! The Frogs' tongue is attched to the front of its mouth, not the back like humans. When a Frog catches its prey it wraps they prey with its sticky tongue and then the tongue snaps back and pushes the food into its throat. Frogs can also be the food for reptiles and birds. Even humans eat them! In some countries Frog legs are considered food.
Interesting Facts
The Frogs have a very good eyesight, and can often see in every direction. The Frogs also have an amazing sight of hearing. Forgs have very powerful hind legs and webbed feet that help them jump great distances and swim long distances easily. Frogs even use their legs to dig their holes for hibernating. Some Frogs can jump 20 times their own body lenght.Frogs all come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. A group of Forgs is called an army. Frogs do not drink water, they absorb it through their skin. Frog bones form a ring during hibernating, just like trees! Scientists use the rings to discover how old certain frogs are!
