Tualangs at the Tropical Rainforests
The Tualang is an incredible emergent tree that can grow up to 250 feet! The Tualang needs to be so high because it needs sun to live. They prefer damp locations along rivers, close to valleys, and in the lower slopes of hills. The leaves they have a pinnate with 4 to 5 leaflets growing along the central rib. Their seeds are contained within large pods. The trunk has a slippery silver bark. The Tualang is common locally, but it is not abundant because there are not forests that are only of Tualangs. A lone Tualang can be more valuable for its honey than its timber. The wood is also incredibly hard.Perhaps the Tualangs are best known for their huge honey combs, the combs are 6 feet across and can contain up to 30,000 bees. Before Tualangs were chopped off very often because of its honey but now they are protected by Sarawak's Wildlife Protection Bill of 1990.
